Propane

A green energy source.

Increasingly, customers are choosing propane over other fuel alternatives for its environmental benefits. Propane is considered a clean-burning, green fuel due to the simplicity of its chemical make up. Specifically, propane contains less carbon content, meaning it emits less greenhouse gases when burned or released into the air. Additionally, it is a non-toxic, non-caustic liquid, which means there is no harm to the environment if spilled or leaked in transport. Even better, it is a highly efficient energy source; it generates the same performance as other fuel alternatives at a lower cost.

A smaller carbon footprint.

Lately, there is a conversation promoting electricity as the superior green energy source for residential needs. However, this fails to account for the entire life cycle of the product, which includes total emissions from the extraction, production, transport, storage and finally, combustion of the molecule. Recently, analysts have shifted to use the measure of carbon intensity to evaluate the impact of energy sources, which includes emissions produced from the source all the way to end use.  A recent study revealed that when expressed as a national average, propane’s carbon intensity is actually lower than that of electricity – by almost half.

How Efficient is Propane?

To illustrate the efficiency of propane, let’s take a look at the usage of a 100,000 BTU/hr furnace. Based off one hour of operation, the furnace would burn 97.1 cubic feet of natural gas. However, when using propane, the furnace would only burn 39.7 cubic feet, all the while generating the same output.
